Akane the Cordyceps-infected Moth Girl

Description

What do we have here? Looks like it's another Parasite Monster Girl! The last one I'll be drawing for 2016. Meet Akane the Cordyceps-infected Moth Girl - it seems like she is in a spot of bother after becoming infected with a certain infamous fungus. But then again, it does make her look pretty badass with those spikey stromata poking out of her extremities.

The fungus is she parasitised by is based on a species called (currently) Cordyceps tuberculata. In fact, the form that I have depicted here is the anamorph form of the fungus - which used to be classified as a different species call Akanthomyces pistillariformis because it looked so different from teleomorph form. You can see photos of infected moths with the anamorph of the fungus here, here, here and here. The teleomorph of Cordyceps tuberculata (not depicted here) can be seen here.

On a note about her outfit, it was not my original intention to give her a Christmas-y costume. But I guess I must have been caught up in the spirit of the seaon and things ended up working out that way. Besides, I think Akane looks rather cute in that outfit, don't you think?

I have seen Cordyceps only once on the wild, the Cordyceps militaris. This species infects moth caterpillars and pupae, usually only the fruit bodies of fungi are seen above the ground. The C. militaris is the only one member of this genus which occurs in Hungary, yet still a rarity.
